DIETARY TRAITS OF LATE MIOCENE HIPPARIONS FROM MARAGHEH REVEALED THROUGH DENTAL WEAR

چکیده

This study investigates the palaeoecology of fossil perissodactyls (equids) from late Miocene Maragheh, northwestern Iran. We used dental micro- and mesowear techniques to draw robust inferences about equid paleoenvironment. Mesowear microwear analyses were applied upper molars three species hipparionine horses. For this purpose, we investigated samples fossiliferous localities: Rohanion, Azim, Cizdahaban. Six specimens analyzed for enamel meso- results compared an extensive database extant ungulates. Results indicated overlap Maragheh hipparions with dietary signal grazers grass-dominated mixed feeders. is consistent supposed vegetational habitat proposed by previous studies. The different had similar diets consuming a mixture plants but preference grasses. These are paleoenvironmental reconstructions dominated open grassland areas among more wooded settings.

Paleoecology of the Akkașdağı hipparions (Mammalia, Equidae), late Miocene of Turkey

Akkașdağı is an abundant and diverse Turolian mammalian locality from Central Anatolia. Our paper reports the findings of our investigation of the paleoenvironment using an ecomorphological approach on the metapodials of hipparionine horses from Akkașdağı. First, a detailed description of the underlying theoretical model is given, and a habitat score is described. Then the model developed here ...

The Late Miocene paleoenvironment of Afghanistan as inferred from dental microwear in artiodactyls

Dental microwear of Late Miocene artiodactyls from Afghanistan can yield information on paleodiet and thus inferences can be drawn about their paleoenvironment. The ‘‘Molayan’’ locality lies at the border between the Greek–Iranian and Siwalik bioprovinces. Knowledge of the paleoenvironment will further our understanding of the faunal exchanges between these two provinces during the Late Miocene...

First mammal fossil locality from the late Miocene of Zagros, western Iran

A new and the first mammal fossil locality from the Zagros Basin of Iran is reported here. The fossil locality, known as Dimeh, is located in the Lorestan province, west of Iran. The fauna includes abundant bovid cranial remains, mostly representing boselaphines and palaeoryxoids, as well as gazelles and spiral horned antelopes. Hipparionine horses similar to Hippotherium group are also represe...

Opportunistic Feeding Strategy for the Earliest Old World Hypsodont Equids: Evidence from Stable Isotope and Dental Wear Proxies

BACKGROUND The equid Hippotherium primigenium, with moderately hypsodont cheek teeth, rapidly dispersed through Eurasia in the early late Miocene. This dispersal of hipparions into the Old World represents a major faunal event during the Neogene. The reasons for this fast dispersal of H. primigenium within Europe are still unclear. Based on its hypsodonty, a high specialization in grazing is as...
